Have you ever sat down at your computer (or typewriter, if you prefer) with all sorts of great ideas only to have them evaporate the moment you put your hands over the keyboard? I know I have had plenty of blank stares and as I stare at my computer screen. Particularly when I’m writing about myself. Why do we have such a hard time writing about ourselves? Why do we have trouble writing our own resumes? Coming up with our strengths? For those of you who read the Harry Potter series, Harry had the same trouble in the 4th book. It took someone else to help him come up with his strengths.
We often don’t see ourselves as others see us. We discount our own gifts and talents. Often a trusted friend, family member, or teacher, etc. who brings out the best in us, and someone who will be honest with us without tearing us down, will be the great source for help. Make sure it’s someone who is honest and doesn’t just tell you what you want to hear. But also make sure it’s someone who will build you up and not tear you down (my first book in my Nightsinger series deals with this).
If you have trouble writing all of those great ideas that were just in your head, try walking around the room and talking into a recorder, a words to type app, or a program like Audacity. Then, come back to your computer and write your brainstorming down.
Give it a try. I hope this helps.
And remember the hardest part is just getting started.
